17th Century Formal Garden - Masterplan

A proposal for the redesign of part of Capel Manor’s formal 17th Century Garden. A herb parterre forms the central point of the garden. An avenue of lavender guides viewers towards the lake exit. A central avenue runs through the length of the design to the focal point pergola swathed in aromatic climbers.

A pastel colour palette of pale purple, light blue and white unifies the scheme. Spires, globes and umbels run through the flower forms to generate aesthetic appeal. Ornamental seed heads will linger on to extend the season of interest into Autumn and Winter

A symmetrical layout creates formality, order and unity. Spire forms run through the planting with the flowers of the Digitalis and Muscari to the topiary form of the Taxus baccata. The butress-cut Rosemary hedge matches the form of the garden border hedge.

A vibrant colour scheme of pink and white is used for this planting. The pergola is the central focal point of the garden, swathed in honeysuckle, jasmine and sweet peas. This creates a colourful, aromatic seating space and destination of choice within the garden. Climbing roses flank the pergola, the bare stems of their bases clothed with peonies and geraniums.
